▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓ 1. SPECIFICATION ▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓
Teach Mode:
Has eight graduated lessons and adapts itself automatically to the
users skill level.
Speed Mode:
Is designed for typists and companies to measure typing speeds.
Game Mode:
Adapts itself to the typists skill, forcing the user to type faster
and faster throughout the five skill levels.
▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓ 2. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS ▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓
TOUCH TYPE TUTOR is designed for minimal system requirements and should be
runable on just about any IBM PC type or compatible. A command parameter
allows the program to run on non-IBM or incompatible MS-DOS base machines.
In these cases invoke TOUCH TYPE TUTOR using the command: ttt -b
This causes it to use MS-DOS system calls instead of BIOS calls. In this case
it is imperative that either the DOS ANSI.SYS device driver is included in the
CONFIG.SYS file, or that the machine accepts standard ANSI cursor codes. Add
the line DEVICE=C:\DOS\ANSI.SYS or similar (depending on where you keep your
DOS files) to the config.sys file. TOUCH TYPE TUTOR uses no graphics display
modes and so is compatible with any type of color or black and white adapter.
The style files for the speed test are standard ASCII files which may be edited
should you wish to expand or modify them. There is no limit to the length, they
will get split into 11-line screens automatically when the test is running. As
supplied, they are 11 or fewer lines long as this has proved sufficient in
practice to accurately measure a typist's speed without wasting their time with
lengthy material.
To edit the speed test files (see below for the list of file names) use either
the EDLIN command which is described in your MS-DOS manual, or use any editor
or word-processor you may bought for your system. Remember to save as ASCII
if you are using a word-processor, and use no special word-processing commands.

▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ 5.1 START-UP PROCEDURE ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒
From the DOS prompt type the following to start TOUCH TYPE TUTOR: ttt
There is an alternative method of starting TOUCH TYPE TUTOR which supplies the
name of the user from the command line. This is the same name you would use
when running the tutor in teach-mode and allows an automatic way of starting
e.g. from a batch file, so that you do not need to type in your name every
time you run the program. For example, if the name you use is "Fred" start
the program by typing: ttt -nFred
(The "-n" is a standard UNIX way of specifying switches).
If you are using a (very) incompatible PC, the BIOS calls made by TTT(tm) may
not work properly. In this case, start TTT(tm) using the -b switch, in which
case it will use the ANSI.SYS driver instead. (You must have an entry in your
CONFIG.SYS file such as "DEVICE=ANSI.SYS" for this to work).
▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ 5.2 OPTION SELECTION ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒
The program features menu boxes for ease of use. Select the desired option
using the up and down arrow keys and then hit enter. Select the QUIT option
to return one menu level back and finally to quit the program from the top
level.
Version 3.0 adds shortcuts for the menu selection boxes. You will notice
that the first character in each selection line is highlighted. Instead of
using the up and down arrow keys, simply type the highlighted letter of the
selection you wish to choose. The option will be selected immediately.
Remember to use the online help provided if you are not sure which option to
select.
A new feature in version 3.0 was to allow use of the space bar to terminate
a sentence instead of the return key. Many users indicated that they were
used to word processors which automatically wrapped at the end of a line and
so typing a space seemed more natural. In version 3.0 you can type either a
carriage return or a space as desired.
▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒ 5.3 FILES PRODUCED ▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒▒
The results of the speed test (using any selected style) are stored in the
file RESULTS.TTX. This file is overwritten after every completed speed test.
It provides a copy of the results for reference purposes after the test has
been completed.
The results of the tutorial lessons (referred to as "history files") are stored
in files whose name is of the form NAME.TTT, where NAME is the name you typed
in when prompted at the beginning of the tutorial. These files are updated
only at the completion of all six screens of a lesson. By using the MS-DOS
"print" or "type" command on this file you can review your typing progress to
date. These files are also editable using the MS-DOS EDLIN command, or any
other editor, and some users have reported that they have enhanced the useful-
ness of TTT by changing the last line to reflect a different lesson number.
In this manner it is possible to select any lesson, either a new lesson or a
previous lesson, such that TTT "believes" this is your current lesson the next
time you run it.
Note that this is effectively "cheating" and it is left to individual users
to decide whether this is more beneficial to their progress than the normal
operation of the program. Please note that if a word-processor is used, be
very careful not to change the format of the file and to always save it as
straight ASCII text with no embedded commands. If the format of the file is
changed such that TTT does appear to be operating correctly any more, the
best course of action is probably to delete the history file so that TTT will
create a new one. Of course, the history data will then be lost.
▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓ 6. PROGRAM SELF-CHECK ▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓▓
TOUCH TYPE TUTOR provides a measure of protection for itself against accidental
corruption during downloads from bulletin boards. A self-check is performed
when the program starts up and will notify the user upon failure. Note that
the program must be run from the directory where it resides or the self-check
will fail.
